Discount Prescription Cards Help Residents Afford Medication
Delaware County Council Continues To Offer TrustScripts Cards
In response to positive feedback from residents, Delaware County Council is continuing to offer prescription discount cards to the residents to help them cope with the cost of prescription medication.
In December 2009, Council approved an agreement between the County and TrustScripts LLC to make available prescription discount cards for use by individuals and families.
After an overwhelmingly positive response, Council continues to distribute the free prescription cards through senior centers, libraries, the Office of Veterans Affairs, the Office of Intercommunity Health Coordination and county Human Services agencies. Recent feedback from residents to the TrustScripts program has indicated an average savings of $24 per prescription.
One resident, Leroy Richardson of Upland, said he saved $105 on one prescription.
“My drug was going to cost me $128,” Richardson said. “I gave the pharmacist my TrustScripts card and I ended up paying $23 total for my medicine. I saved $105. It was like getting a Christmas present.”
TrustScripts is a free discount prescription card that is accepted at over 58,000 pharmacies nationwide, including independent pharmacies and major chains, such as CVS and Wal-Mart. The cards are free and require no sign-up. Residents simply present the card with their prescription to the pharmacy before payment and available discounts are applied to the cost. There are 110 participating pharmacies in Delaware County.
Residents can use the discount card regardless of whether or not they are insured. Discounts are available to the uninsured, the underinsured and in some cases, the insured. Individuals with insurance plans and Medicare may enjoy discounts for drugs not covered by their current health plans.
“County Council is pleased that so many residents have found relief with the discount prescription cards,” said County Council Chairman Jack Whelan. “We will continue to offer these cards through our County offices to help ensure that our residents can obtain the medications they need to stay healthy.”
The TrustScripts card explains how the program works. There is no enrollment, no paperwork, no fee. The card is most helpful for people without prescription coverage, for senior citizens in the Medicare Part D coverage gap, and for people taking medication not covered by their insurance program.
In addition, the TrustScripts Web site provides an online drug-pricing tool to help residents find the best deal by shopping around. By typing in their medication name, dosage, and zip code, users receive an automated search of local pharmacy prices, for both brand name and generic drugs of their choice. A list of the most popular discounted medications is available on the TrustScripts Web site.
Residents can choose to print additional cards by visiting the TrustScripts Web site. For more information on TrustScripts, call (877) 827-7874 or visit their Web site at http://www.trustscripts.com/.
