Gradyville Road Bridge:
FAQs
Why is the bridge closed?
The Gradyville Road bridge was inspected by the township engineer in May of 2011 and it was found to be structurally unstable and in danger of collapsing. The Board of Supervisors immediately ordered the Township Manager to close the bridge and commence working on replacement of the structure.
When will the new bridge be built?
When the design modifications are complete and final approvals received, the completion of the bridge will follow the following anticipated timeline:
- Late June, 2013 -- Project goes out to bid to qualified contractors through PennDOT’s Electronic Contract Management System (ECMS).
- A “Notice to Proceed” should be received by late September, 2013 which triggers the start of the construction process.
When will the road be opened for traffic again?
- Construction should be completed and the bridge re-opened by mid-February, 2014.
Why is it taking so long?
Originally, a schedule of design, funding and replacement was established that would have enabled the bridge to be completed and re-opened by this spring. A subsequent issue regarding the approval of plans by PennDOT had moved the start date of construction to May of 2013, with a completion date of October, 2013.
In December of 2012 a request was received from Edgmont Township and DELCORA (the Delaware County Regional Water Quality Control Authority) regarding the accommodation of a force main pipe as part of the bridge design and construction. Their request was intended to accommodate the future sewer needs of Edgmont and Newtown residents.
