The Public Works Department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of Newtown Township’s 49.47 miles of roads, plus storm and sanitary sewers, parks, trails, buildings and other infrastructure. The department oversees the collection of home recyclables, the annual collection of leaves on all public streets and grounds in the autumn, and maintains an extensive fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment required to perform the constant upkeep of township infrastructure.
The Department is manned by one director and five staff members who work to accomplish their required duties each day of the year, and they are on-call 24/7. Some examples of their required tasks include storm water inlet maintenance, roadway repairs, tree and brush clearing, snow and ice control, traffic signal and streetlight maintenance, sewer and sewage pump station maintenance and the installation and maintenance of road signs.
