Historical Note
In 1681, William Penn planned the "first inland town west of Philadelphia" at the intersection of Goshen Road & Newtown Street Road. The Township was laid out around a center square, or "townstead".
Penn had planned New Town while still in England and was able to sell a considerable number of tracts before leaving England. Newtown was organized in 1686 as the Townstead.
Today some farms and large estates remain, but for the most part, the Township was developed into a suburban community with old stone homes and structrues dotting the landscape to serve as reminders of days gone by.
